Oldham Council is to spend £140,000 on genetic counselling services for couples who are genetically related

Oldham Council is to spend £140,000 on genetic counselling services for couples who share genetic kinship & plan to have children. This is to help reduce high levels of inherited genetic disorders in children from within sections of Oldham’s community where marrying within the immediate family is commonplace. This subject has been highlighted many times in past years and the last incident we recall was when an Oldham doctor talked about birth defects in first cousin marriages in Oldham, he subsequently went on to receive death threats.
